The game is voxel-based, which means that the building is simple and the environment is destructible. Players have to find resources to defend and feed themselves. The objects gathered and found degrade through use, which forces players into a constant search for better equipment. The game also has a unique horde mechanic, where a large group of zombies swarms the players' location every seventh day. If preparations for the attack are not sufficient, players will be killed.

7 Days to Die is a multiplayer game, where other players can connect to the game server and be cooperative or hostile towards each other.
